According to state police, the former One Direction member fell from the balcony on the third floor of a hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He was most recognized for his work with the boy band consisting of Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. After leaving the band in 2016, he pursued a very successful solo music career. That year, Payne's debut single, "Strip That Down" with Quavo, was released. He also worked with artists like DJ Zedd and J Balvin.
"I'm in shock right now," Charlie Puth remarked on Instagram Stories. "Liam was always really kind to me. He was one of the first significant artists I worked with. "I can't believe he's gone." He posted a video of the two musicians when they were younger with the caption, "I am really upset right now; may he rest in peace. I am deeply sorry."
Zedd, who collaborated with Payne on 2017's "Get Low," paid tribute, tweeting, "RIP Liam… I cannot believe this is true... "Truly heartbreaking..."
"So sad to hear the news of @LiamPayne's passing," Paris Hilton tweeted. "I'm sending love and condolences to his family and loved ones. "RIP, my friend."
Rapper Ty Dolla Sign posted on in his Instagram story, alongside a video of Payne, "Just spoke to you two days ago, my guy. I'll miss you, frfr."
Lou Teasdale, One Direction's former hairstylist, tweeted, "Sending you all so much love."
"This all feels so surreal," One Direction guitarist Dan Richards said on social media. "Thank you to everyone who reached out. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around everything. "My thoughts are with Liam's family at this time."
Liam Gallagher, an Oasis member, posted to his followers: "Life is precious, kids, and you only get to do it ONCE. Take it easy."
