"I haven't ever mentioned this," she revealed in the new cover story of Vanity Fair's October issue, "but I can't bear my own children. I have a number of medical concerns that could jeopardize both my and the baby's lives. "That was something I had to mourn for a while."
The 32-year-old added that, despite the discovery, she still intends to have children and is grateful for the medical options offered to her.
"It's not necessarily the way I envisioned it," the Only Murders in the Building star, who has been open about her lupus fight, said of welcoming a child. "I expected it to happen the same way it does for everyone. [But] I'm in a much better place after that. I consider it a godsend that there are amazing people willing to perform surrogacy or adoption, both of which are fantastic options for me."
Regarding the next chapter of her personal life, Selena stated, "I'm excited for what that journey will look like, but it will be a little different." At the end of the day, I don't really care. It will be mine. "It will be my baby."
And, while the pop star's romance with music producer Benny Blanco has been known for over a year, she informed the source that she had been thinking about becoming a mother even before they met.
"Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, with the exception of going on a few dates," she told me. "And I was like, 'Okay, if this is the feeling, what is the most essential thing for me? Family.'"
Earlier this year, Benny told Howard Stern that having children was his "next goal on the box."
In response, Selena told Vanity Fair, "He cannot lie. After the interview, I couldn't stop laughing. 'Anything else you wanted to put out there?'"
Regarding the couple's PDA-filled romance, the "Same Old Love" singer said, "I've never been loved this way. He's only been a light. A complete bright spot in my life. He's my very best pal. "I love telling him everything."
Despite this, the couple is under no rush to marry soon.
"We always make sure we're protecting what we have, but there's no rules," she informed me. "I want him to always be himself." "I always want to be myself."
And if the time comes for the couple to go down the aisle, one thing is certain.
"I'm not changing my name, no matter what," she declared. "I'm Selena Gomez." That's it.
