The charges in the indictment were not immediately obvious.
"We are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unjust prosecution of Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney's Office," Diddy's lawyer Marc Agnifilo told Us Weekly. "Sean 'Diddy' Combs is a music icon, self-made entrepreneur, loving family man, and proven philanthropist who has spent the last 30 years building an empire, adoring his children, and working to uplift the Black community."
Agnifilo said, "He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal. To his credit, Mr. Combs has been completely forthcoming throughout this investigation, and he willingly relocated to New York last week in anticipation of these allegations. Please wait your judgment until you have all of the information. These are the actions of an innocent man with nothing to conceal, and he hopes to clear his name in court."
The rapper was reportedly arrested in connection with seven ongoing sexual assault and sex trafficking charges against him. He has denied all claims.
Diddy was recently ordered to pay a $100 million default judgment in a civil action filed by a Michigan inmate who accused the music mogul of sexual assault.
The default judgment was issued after Diddy failed to appear for a virtual hearing on September 9. Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith claimed in a complaint that Diddy drugged and sexually abused him at a 1997 party in Detroit.
Diddy's lawyer lambasted the ruling, alleging that Diddy "has never heard of him" and that he never received the lawsuit.
According to court documents acquired by Us last week, Diddy filed an emergency motion to annul the default decision and dissolve a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction.
In May, the "Bad Boys" rapper made an apology to ex-girlfriend Cassie after surveillance footage revealed him attacking her in a hotel in 2016. Cassie, 38, sued Diddy in November 2023 for sexual assault and other allegations. They settled the lawsuit one day after it was filed.
"I hit rock bottom, but I make no excuses," he wrote on Instagram. "My behavior in that video is unacceptable. I fully accept responsibility for my conduct in that video. I am disgusted. I went and sought professional assistance. I have been going to therapy and rehab. I had to beseech God for mercy and grace. I am deeply sorry, but I am devoted to becoming a better guy every day. I am not asking for forgiveness. I am sincerely sorry."
In addition to the sexual assault claims, Diddy's Los Angeles and Miami houses were raided in March as part of a sex trafficking investigation.
"Earlier today, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners," the department told Us in a statement at the time in question. "We will provide further information as it becomes available."
According to NBC News, federal officials in New York examined three women and one guy. Three additional interviews were apparently scheduled, all related to claims of "sex trafficking, sexual assault, and the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms."
