Carpenter's latest single "Taste" debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with her pre-release singles "Please Please Please" and "Espresso" coming in third and fourth place, respectively. All 12 tracks made the chart, with positions ranging from 2 to 41. According to Billboard, she joins Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande as the only women to have three singles in the top five at the same time.
According to Billboard, the 12-track album earned the year's third-best opening week, selling 362,000 equivalent album units. Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department (2.61 million equivalent album sales) and Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter (407,000 equivalent album units) are ranked first and second, respectively.
Short N' Sweet had been widely anticipated before to its debut. Carpenter uploaded a snippet of "Taste" on Instagram the day before its release, taking advantage of the social media platform's most recent update, which allows users to add songs to their profiles.
The "Taste" music video caused quite a stir online. Carpenter's music video begins with a content warning and shows him selecting various weapons while singing, "Rock-a-bye baby, snug in your bed / Right now you are sleeping / And soon you'll be… dead." The pop star then takes a time to apply lipstick in the mirror of a huge knife.
Throughout the charmingly campy film, Carpenter and Jenna Ortega actually battle to the death over who looks to be Ortega's current lover and Carpenter's former. A chorus of "Heard you're back together, and if that's true / You'll just have to taste me when he's kissing you" sets the tone as the two young stars try to kill each other with shotguns, knives, chainsaws, voodoo dolls, and other weapons.
Carpenter and Ortega even kiss in the video, resulting in the death of the lover. The couple, dressed in all black, stand in front of his casket before going away as friends, laughing and enjoying milkshakes.
In June, the 25-year-old singer achieved her first No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 with the viral ballad "Please Please Please," Short n' Sweet's second single. The first track, "Espresso," has been on the chart for 20 weeks and peaked at No. 2 earlier this summer.
Carpenter is also anticipated to perform at the forthcoming MTV Video Music Awards, which have been rescheduled for September 11 rather than the previously stated September 10. The decision is intended to avoid the award show from broadcasting at the same time as the upcoming presidential debate.
The pop star's sold-out Short n' Sweet Tour will begin this fall in Columbus, Ohio. The North American tour will conclude in Los Angeles, with gigs at the Crypto.com Arena on November 15 and the Kia Forum on November 17 and 18.
