Lady Gaga explains why she never shut down rumors she is a man: 'I didn't feel like a victim with that lie'

Lady Gaga is speaking out about why she never addressed claims that she was truly a male early in her career.

During a 2011 CNN interview, the singer-actress famously dismissed a question about the allegation, asking, "Why the hell am I going to waste my time and give a press release about whether or not I have a penis?" My fans do not care, and neither do I." Years later, during an appearance on Netflix's What's Next?, she opens up about the relentless barrage of falsehoods about her online. "When I was in my early 20s, there was a rumor that I was a man," Lady Gaga said Bill Gates in the second episode. "I traveled all over the world. I traveled for tours and to promote my recordings, and nearly every interview I sat in—there was this doctored images on the internet—they were like, 'There's whispers that you're a man. "What are your thoughts on that?"

The Joker: Folie à Deux star refused to answer the questions "because I didn't feel like a victim with that lie, and I thought: What about a kid who is being accused of that, who would think that a public figure like me would feel shame?"

"I've been in situations where fixing a rumor was not in the best interest of the well-being of other people," she told me. "In that circumstance, I attempted to be thought-provoking and disruptive in another manner. I attempted to leverage the misinformation to create another disruptive point.

Lady Gaga also stated that she had "been used to lies being printed about me since I was 20 years old." I am a performer. I think it's quite humorous."

The Grammy-winning vocalist was a force to be reckoned with early in her career, recognized for daring to defy convention. She eventually traveled to Hollywood, where she won an award for her portrayal in the film A Star Is Born (2018). Lady Gaga will now star in the next film Joker: Folie à Deux, which will be released on October 4.
